In January 2025, tensions escalated as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that massive strikes on Gaza were “only the beginning” and future negotiations with Hamas “will take place only under fire.”
Israel’s Military Campaign
Recent strikes killed more than 400 people across Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Netanyahu stated, “Hamas has already felt the strength of our arm in the past 24 hours. This is only the beginning.”
Stalled Negotiations
Negotiations have stalled over proceeding with a ceasefire after its first phase expired. Netanyahu emphasized that “military pressure is essential for the release of additional hostages.”
Hamas’s Response
Hamas accused Israel of attempting to force its surrender. Hamas leader Sami Abu Zuhri stated the strikes aimed “to impose a surrender agreement, writing it in the blood of Gaza.”
Humanitarian Impact
The Gaza health ministry reported 413 casualties, with “victims still under the rubble.” UNICEF noted many children among the dead and wounded, with medical facilities “overwhelmed.”
International Response
The UN and countries worldwide condemned the strikes. The White House confirmed Israel consulted the US administration before launching the operation, while a State Department spokesperson said “Hamas bears total responsibility for the resumption of hostilities.”
Hostage Situation
Israel vowed to continue fighting until all hostages from the October 2023 attack are returned. Of 251 hostages seized, 58 remain in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.
The conflict was triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack, which resulted in 1,218 deaths, mostly civilians. Israel’s retaliation has killed at least 48,577 people, also mostly civilians, according to figures from both sides.
