Tragic Incident off Verde Island
A scuba diving expedition turned deadly for two Russian tourists in the Philippines on Thursday. The incident occurred off Verde Island, a popular diving destination in Batangas province, south of Manila.
The Dive Gone Wrong
Four Russian tourists, accompanied by a Filipino dive instructor, set out for what should have been a routine dive. However, strong undercurrents swept the group away, separating them from their boat. While two of the Russians and the instructor managed to swim back to safety, two others went missing.
Search and Recovery
The Philippine coast guard, along with local divers, immediately launched a search operation. Tragically, both missing divers were found dead:
- Maksim Melekhov, 39, was discovered unconscious at sea and later declared dead at a local hospital.
- Ilia Peregudin, 29, was found in a more gruesome state, being attacked by sharks with his right arm severed.
Shark Attack: A Rare Occurrence
Shark attacks in Philippine waters are extremely uncommon, with no recorded incidents in at least a year. This makes the attack on Peregudin particularly shocking and noteworthy.
Official Response
Captain Airland Lapitan, the Philippine coast guard provincial commander, provided details about the recovery efforts. He described the challenging situation of finding Peregudin surrounded by sharks, stating that rescuers “somehow managed to pull him away.”
Safety Concerns and Future Measures
This tragic incident has raised concerns about diver safety in the region. The coast guard has announced plans to meet with provincial officials to discuss preventative measures and improve safety protocols for popular diving spots like Verde Island.
A Warning to Divers
This event serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of scuba diving, especially in areas prone to strong currents. Divers are urged to exercise caution and adhere strictly to safety guidelines when exploring underwater environments.
As investigations continue, the diving community and local authorities will likely reassess and strengthen safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
